Homosexuality, Part 4

Dear Pastor:

        If Governments legislate in favour of homosexuality, should we not in obedience to our governments accept homosexuality?

Dear Reader,

        It is true that many governments are passing laws in favour of homosexuality. We recently heard of the mayor of London, England, offering 100,000 pounds for gays and lesbians to marry there [London Times, April, 01]. And across the world some governments are introducing instructions to children in the grade schools about the legitimacy of homosexuality. This is a real concern to many Christians. How should we as Christians proceed without falling foul of the law?

        First of all, we should agree with our governments that everyone needs to be protected from persecution by others who are intolerant of others’ views or practices. However, government that make laws in favour of homosexuality are working contrary to God’s laws and to the traditional laws that every society has followed for thousands of years; in fact these laws were instituted from Creation when God created all systems and set up the standards for life. Therefore, governments that sanction homosexuality do so contrary to God’s wishes. Governments that permit gay or lesbian marriages do so contrary to God’s wishes for humanity. If people choose to be gay then it is their choice, but this choice should not be sanctioned by governments in contradiction to God’s laws of morality. 

        The Lord, whom we Canadians recognize as the Supreme God as written in our Bill of Rights, has made it abundantly clear that homosexuality is vile and is an abomination, and that the persons who practice this would be destroyed if they do not repent. No government has the right to supersede God’s laws of morality and enforce this upon its citizens. Here is what God says in His word: (Lev 18:22 KJVThou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. And again, (Lev 20:13 KJVIf a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. And once more from the New Testament, (1 Cor 6:9 KJVKnow ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind.

        These texts tell us that homosexuality is wrong, and that the practitioners will be destroyed by God when He returns to this earth. Now if God condemns an act, then no government has the right to justify that act. To do so would be to be like Pharaoh of old who defied God by refusing to allow His people Israel to leave Egypt. And just as God destroyed the King and his armies, so will he destroy these governments who persist in making laws that are contrary to God’s laws. 

        In view of the above argument, dear reader, Christians cannot accept laws that are contrary to God’s laws. Our obedience must first and foremost be to God, even if that means going contrary to governments’ laws. While we must be obedient to our governments, because God has ordained governments, we cannot obey them when they go contrary to God’s ruling.

        The Bible tells us that it is better to obey God rather than man. If all the world obeyed God’s laws we would have a better world. Here is wishing you God’s wisdom in dealing with laws that are contrary to God’s laws.
