The Bible vs. Tradition?
Which is correct to implicity follow, the Bible alone, or the Bible and tradition? The RC (Roman Catholic) church says that tradition and the Bible are sacred and must both be forms of Divine revelation. (John A. Hardon, SJ., The Question and Answer Catholic Cathechism. P. 37, (NY. 1981)). It also said at the Councel of Trent in 1545: Archbishop of Reggio said that tradition stood above Scripture. The authority of the church could not therefore be bound to the authority of the Scriptures. (Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, vol. 6, p. 306).
For us Protestants we ask, which should we follow, the Bible or tradition? Let’s see what the Bible says:
1. To the law and the testimony, if they speak not according to this word it’s because there is no light in them . Isa. 8:20.
2. But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept. Line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little…Isa. 28:13.
3.Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17.
4. Men have made the commandments of God of none effect by their tradition. Mat. 15:1-6.
5. Paul persecuted God church according to the traditions of the church leaders, until God corrected him. Gal. 1:13-16.
6. Beware lest any man spoil you through..traditons of men and not after Christ’s teachings. Col. 2:8.
7. Christ has redeemed us from man’s traditions by this precious blood. 1 Pet. 1:18, 19.
8. The only traditions we should follow are those taught us by the Word as the disciples taught them. 2Thes. 2:15; 3:6.
9.Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin agains t thee. Ps. 119:11.
10. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my way. Ps. 119:105.
